We hope by printing this we can keep you, the citizens of Fairfax better informed of what ' s going on and future dans for Fairfax. it would be nice if this could be a monthly newsletter, but because of costs it will be published each quarter , unless we can find some volunteers or groups that would be willing to hared deliver the newsletter . If anyone or a. group would like to do that , call myself or Betty at City Hall . I want to encourage the citizens of Fairfax to become involved in city government , come to council meetings , express your thoughts , volunteer your time, run for Mayor or Council . Please don' t wait until something is done and then complain about it . Get involved, make Fairfax an even better place to lave . The Fairfax Public Library is enjoying an large increase in circulation since moving into the new facility. If you haven't visited the new library, we invite you to come. Please ask for a tour so that you won't miss the parts that aren't always open to the public. We receive new books almost weekly. If there is a title that you mould like to see the library purchase please feel free to let the librarians know. We are always interested in purchasing what the public wants. If you are interested in having your child attend please call the library at 846-2994. SUMMER is approaching rapidly!! We will be having a Summer Reading Program again this year. We are looking forward to some neve and exciting changes in the program this year so we hope to see lots of you. The theme for this years program is STORY SPINNERS. These People are F .A.T. F .A.T. , in this case, stands for FAIRFAX ARBOR TEAM. This group was formed in January 1992 after the city of Fairfax was awarded a $1 ,000 grant from "Trees Forever" and Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. Natural Trees Forever is one of the programs of the Iowa Heritage Foundation. Established in 1979 the Foundation' s mission is to build partnerships and educate Iowans to protect , preserve and enhance Iowa' s natural resources for future generations . Trees Forever currently administers these programs for all Iowa investor - owned utilities , consisting of matching grants with W, program assistance . 04 The City of Fairfax was awarded a grant of $1 ,0008 again, for 1993) and, the F.A.T . folks went into action to once again raise $1 , 000 to match the grant . on March 7 , 31 volunteers prepared and served a pancake and sausage breakfast at St . Patrick' s Auditorium. - on Saturday March 6 , 18 volunteers did the preliminary preparation tA*" camne at - this is roughly 175 volunteer hours a_tremendous show of community spirit. Bob' s Meats and the Dairy Queen donated the sausages fte Quaker oats Company donated the pancake mix and syrups Fairfax State Bank made a large cash donation, and St . Patrick' s gave the use of the auditorium. Door prizes were donated by Fairfax and Cedar Rapids businesses . Volunteers included the coffee pouring mayor , Russ Nading, Fairfax business men, volunteer firemen, Fairfax City employees , City Council and personell from every facet of Fairfax. . . . a real community effort . Last year the funds were used to landscape the new library. This year the funds will be used to complete the planting of flowering crab apple trees along the Siouth bank of Prairie Creek. Future planting will be at a new park, at the east end of Front Stree . Fairfax Arbor Team members - Shirley Lowe , Carol Stallman, Karen Schulte , Mary Schneider , Kathleen McNamara, Bernice Kleppe, Steve Selzer and Vernon Cerveny - want to tank all who volunteered and truly made this a success , and we also thank the people of Fairfax for their support .
