MAYORS CORNER Governor Branstad is coming to our city of Fairfax on Tuesday , June the 8th from approximately 10 : 30 to 11 " 30 am. We tentatively have scheduled the Governor for a reception at the library, with a quick tour of our city included . This is quite a feather in our hat, as the Governor usually visits the larger cities . I know you will do everything possible to make his visit a pleasant one. Since clean up day is the Saturday before June 5th everything should be in order for his visit . We welcome all of you to come out to meet the Governor . Soon we will begin inspecting sidewalks and will have to replace those in need of replacing . The City is held jointly liable for any legal action because of a defective sidewalk, so we must begin the process of repair and replacing the ones that need it . A third party engineer will make the inspection and determination and report to the City Council their findings . We will then notify the homeowner of the requirements . Having home owners spend money is never a pleasant task, but this is one that needs to be done to protect our legal responsibility . Please take a moment this Memorial Day to remember those who gave their lives so that we might live in freedom. They were very special people. IR °m LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM The Fairfax Library will sponsor a Reading Program at the library this summer beginning June 7, 1993. The theme for this year is STORY SPINNERS. This year, the Fairfax State Savings Bank has generously donated two bicycles which will be given away at the picnic in August. The date of the picnic is August 134 1993. The child must be present at the picnic Is order to receive the bicycle. There will also be grab bags for the first 95 children who sign up for the reading program. Sign up earlyll! Story Time will be held for children who have not yet started school on Thursday at 6:30 pm and again on Friday at 12:30 pm. These Story Time session will begin the week of June 14, 1993. Please call the library to register your child for Story Time at 846-2994. The library will also provide a Read-To-Me Time on Friday at 1:15 for children who have completed kindergarten but have not yet started fourth grade. Again, register your child by calling the library. FRIENDS OF THE FAIRFAX LIBRARY NEWS The "Friends" are: raising money for a matching grant from the Libri Foundation which provides funds for children• s books to small rural libraries .
