After sixteen months of planning, construction, and re-furnishing,Fairfax State Savings
Bank has planned a"Grand Opening" gala. You are invited to share in this very special
occasion from 12:00pm—6:00pm on Saturday, December 51 ' 1998. As our radio ad
states: "Come one, come all and come as you are, to Fairfax that is, Fairfax State
Savings Bank, member FDIC and the human race".
You've seen the new building and now as Paul Harvey would say: "here's the rest of the
story...
Fairfax State Savings Bank is certainly 11LA business cis usual as far as bank buildings go.
The bank;is 45% larger, sporting an oversized lobby, a new double drive-up, eight
executive offices, a state of the art technology room and seven teller windows, (rive
stand-up and two sit down windows). The general contractor for the project was Jelinek
Construction of Cedar Rapids.
Conceptually the architect,Fairfax native David Sorg of OPN Architects,has attempted
to bring Vanderbilt Street inside. The pillars found on the outside of many banks at the
turn of the century are inside the bank at Fairfax and support the"clere story". The clere
story itself is reminiscent of a silo with a curved top and turn-coated stainless steel,
reflecting our agricultural heritage. The similarity of the front and rear entrances, and
straight thoroughfare reflect fen shui (wind and water) a design element allowing both
wind and water to flow through without interruption. The vault has been clad, in black
granite to reflect strength. The exterior has been brought inside with transitions of red
brick and various forms of architectural design. The extensive use of glass has been used
to allow natural light in,while creating an open and"airy" feeling. Cherry wood has
been used extensively in the bank to create warmth. Many customers have asked if the
drive-up canopy overhead really moves,we're not telling, but keep your eyes on it!
The new bank is fully accessible for handicapped individuals. The two sit down teller
stations allow customers to relax while transacting teller business, opening new accounts,
purchasing bonds or purchasing travelers checks. The technology room doubles as a
board,room,and the technology includes an IBM:think-pad laptop computer, a new video
conferencing table, a Sony 3 "Vega monitor, a high Fidelity sound system including five
speakers and a sub-woofer, and a DVD, (digital-video-disk)player. A new PC (personal
computer) network, new digital cameras and infrared detection devices for security have
also been installed.
Finally, new art and a new phone system are to be in place by the end of November. (We
do have one piece of art already,a crocodile that needs a name! He's friendly though,
really! Come visit him in the customer seating area.)
