FAIRFAX FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Fairfax Firefighters would like to thank everyone who attended the open house at the fire station on April
30, Approximately 300 people were in attendance. Guests were able to see the new fire truck, witness auto
extrication with the"Jaws of Life" and had plenty of food to eat. Guests were also given the opportunity to have
hands-on use of a thereto-imaging camera. This unbelievable piece of technology allows firefighters to look
through smoke and total darkness to find their victims in a fire. This camera was on loan to the fire department
for the open house. Hopefully with the success of future fundraisers,the purchase of a thermo-imaging camera
will be made possible. We would also like to congratulate all of the door prize winners and thank the Fairfax
State Bank for providing the door prizes.
The new fire truck is now in full service. It has already responded to several calls.
The Fairfax Fire Department would like to thank all of the Fairfax and Walford businesses, the City of Fairfax
and all the other contributing patrons who helped mare the USA Days fireworks a success. Without your
financial backing the.fireworks display would not be possible.
We would like to welcome two new members to the department, Jake Williams and Lynn:Miller. l.,ynn was
previously with Palo Fire and Ambulance. The Fire Department would like to congratulate Mike Kaspers on
successfully completing Firefighter I school and passing the National Certification Test. Good Job Mike!
The members of the department have decided to go forward with planning fund-raiser to purchase a thermo-
imaging camera. As a group, we have decided on which manufacturer builds the best camera for the best price.
As time goes on there will be more cameras on the market,thus bringing the prices down. Even with prices
coming down,the camera is still expensive. At this time we are hoping to start fund-raising sometime this fall.
FAIRFAX CITY WIDE GARAGE SALES"
It has been our pleasure to serve as coordinators for the Fairfax citywide garage sales for the past six years.
However, effective immediately, we are resigning this position. Anyone interested in coordinating the sales in
2001 may call us at 846-2597 or Betty at City Hall. Thank you

The Book Sale will begin on Monday July 20 and last through Saturday July 29th.
All proceeds will help buy new books and videos for the library.
Amnesty Week is July 24th through July 29"'. Return past due books and video's and fines will be forgiven.
Special Guest:
Cedar Rapids Storyteller, Joe Nolte will give a special program at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday July 27, 2000 in the
Community Room of the Fairfax Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome. This program will end the
Summer Reading Program sponsored by the Fairfax Public Library. Prizes earned during the program will be
awarded that night.
YARD WASTE
We have started yard waste pickup again. It will be picked up the FIRST and TBM Tuesdays of each month.
Remember not to use plastic bags. Place in garbage cans or in the recyclable paper bags. The weight must be
less than 40 lbs. Branches and twigs must be tied and no longer than 4ft lengths,
HELP from Fairfax Citizens
We have been experiencing a disturbing amount of harassment and vandalism in our community, The City
Council will be offering anyone with information leading to a conviction a Reward of$100.00. We will
prosecute to the ftill extent of the LAW. Please call City Hall if you have any information 846-2204.
If you are victim of harassment or vandalism, please call the Sheriffs Department immediately,
CATS and DOGS
Just a reminder: ALL Cats and Dogs must be on a leash when outside of their yards. This is a City Ordinance.
BUILDING PERMITS
If your are planning on changing the structure of your home, building a shed, or remodeling, please check with
City Hall regarding your plans.
GROWING PAINS
It's nice to see the city grow. However along with growth come growing pains.
We suffered through roads and streets being torn up to allow for newer and larger water mains. We erected a
new water tower,which we desperately needed regardless of the expansion on the noilh,side of Prairie Creek.
A new well was dug just due west of the new tower. The well has been tested at approximately 440 gallons per
minute. Upon completion pump will be added on line. The two present pumps will be rebuilt and put on line
with the new equipment.
The new tower is online being supplied by our present pumps.
Noticing cloudy or red tinted water, this will be a problem until everything is completed. We are experiencing a
pr9blem called "scrubing". Water is pumped here in the older side of town and pushed up into the new tower.
Upon demand the water reverses and comes back to the older side of town again, During previous years since
installation somewhere back in the 50's—early 60's the collection,of iron has been accumulating in,the inside
of the water mains. Every once in a while it would get disturbed by a clap of thunder or a water dept operation
and if not flushed properly the water becomes a brown or reddish color. This change in color does not
necessarily make the water a health hazard however I agree it does not look the most appetizing and it does give
white clothes a dingy look.
We will be having growing pains as long as we are growing. I hate to be the bearer of possible problems,
however when we raise water pressure from approximately 50—52 lbs. Of pressure to around 75 lbs. of
pressure,we must acclimate our system.
This will include leaks, main breaks, discolored water, and possibly a shut down to replace a 40 plus year old
water main.
Whenever you experience cloudy or discolored water let your cold water run to clear the lines. If your run
warm water then you contaminate your water heater and it takes longer to flush your own system.
The old water tower is no longer on line. It will be drained and taken down. We do have some interested
party's regarding purchasing the old water tower. However nothing firm as of today.

PRAIRIE CREEK CLEAN UP PROJECT
On Saturday May 60',twelve volunteers cleaned the banks of Prairie Creek from the Linn-Benton Road to
Hwy 151 in Fairfax.
They started at 8 am and finished at 12 noon.Two pickup loads of trash were gathered.Hot dogs and pop
were enjoyed by all at Prairie Creek Park.Volunteers:Vernon Cerveny,David McMickle,Joe Neuhaus,
Brian Otis,Richard Peterson,Rick Rosendahl,Herb Snell,Ron Stalhuan,Deb and JeffTrachta,KC.
waychoff and Ray Zamastil.
We want to than the city of Fairfax for the support in this effort,we plan to continue our cleanup project
in the future.
The City would like to thank-the volunteers for their work on cleaning tip the creek.banks.

July 11,2000
Mayor Voss called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. Council members present Wainwright and
Scott. Stockton was on speakerphone.Absent Shakespeare and Beer,
Motion Wainwright,2�Scott to approve the agenda,minutes of the June 13'h meetin&clerk's
budget and financial reports.MC.
Mayor Voss opened the public hearing on the new zoning ordinance at 7:04 p.m.No comments or
discussion,public hearing closed at 7:05 p.m. Motion Stockton,2"a Wainwright to adopt the Zoning
Ordinance on its first reading.MC.
Discussion on,the sidewalk issue.Todd Philipp will take care of his sidewalks and they will be ill
place by.the end of August, Brett&Peggy Brophy discussed the problems with their sidewalks,and flit
City will remove the two trees that have caused the problem with the sidewalk and will dicii split the cost
of replacing them with the Brophy's. The City will get the estimates to replace the sidewalks at Brophy's
and in front of Larson's apartments.
Wainwright moved to approve the building permit for Lon Slowly for an 8 plex at 3 02 Burger
Lane,2`1 Scott, on the condition the zoning ordinance passed on its 2ud and Yd readings.MC.
Discussion with the following property owners,Therm Waln,Melody Vance,Mr. &Mrs. Steve
Clark,Joe Blood and Joyce Sandrock,on the problem of the waterway through the property owned by Ron
Hilton.Beer arrived at 7:47 p.m.The City engineer will check the culvert on the south side of E. Cemetery
Rd and try to come to some conclusion on what they would need to do to build on their properties.
Sgt-Lyle Rusk presented the list of calls,A request for the Sheriff's deputy to stop in the Library
when they are in town.DisciLssed were problems with dogs running loose. A letter will go out to the Star
Saloon about leaving their mrindows and doors open when they are open,
