It is currently on display at Hancock Fabrics on Edgewood.. Hancock's generously donated the fabric and one of their employee's her time. The quilt will be at the library on display and then at Fairfax State Savings Bank. 'Pickets will be on sale April 11, 2003 for a$1.00 a chance, $5.00 for six chances. CEDAR CHAMBER MUSIC PERFORMS AT FAIRFAX LIBRARY • Library News Red Cedar Chamber Music brings a performance of early 19th-century chamber music for flute, • Fire Department News guitar and strings to the Fairfax Public Library in Fairfax,at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday,June 8th. This free performance is part of Red Cedar Chamber Music's.Music in Libraries of.I.•irn County Series • Recollections of the Past which is handed by a grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids, Community Foundation's General Endowment Fund. This concert is also a part of Red Cedar Chamber Music's Chamber Music Now • City-Wide Cleanup program, which gives exceptionally-talented high school and college students an opportunity to rehearse and perform with seasoned professional musicians. • Knights of Columbus Violinist,Catherine Miller (University of Iowa), cellist,Thad Sentman(Coe College),and violist,Liz Strip Steak Dinner Zelnick (Washington High School) join Red Cedar Chamber Music artists flutist,Jan Boland and Guitarist,John Dowdall to perform a quartet for flute and strings by Ferdinand Ries and a quartet for ® Quilt Raffle guitar and strings by Francois de Fossa. Both quartets are typical examples of early 19th-century classical compositions written to entertain people in their homes. Each quartet has several City Wide Garage Sale movements which feature beautiful melodies, energetic dance rhythms and clever compositional surprises to delight the ear. In addition to performing the music,Boland and Dowdall will visit with the audience and provide enlightening commentary about the composers, the music and the CITY HALL HOURS instruments. Miller, Sentman and Zelnick participated in the Chamber Music Now program last fall and gave several performances with Boland and Dowdall in Cedar Rapids. Chamber Music Now is sponsored by Monday—Wednesday William P.Whipple and is a part of Red Cedar Chamber Music's Community Connections program. The 7:30 AM 4:00 PM Community Connections program is hosted by the Marion Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council, the City of Marion, Iowa Glass and Target Stores, with additional support from Rockwell Collins and Diamond V Mills,Inc. Notes from a visit with Ben Holets, September 20, 1978 Ben Holets started working at the Leander Lefebure store in Fairfax,November 19, 1906, at the age of 15. He: worked for Leander for five years. Emile Lefebure started the store but then sold it to Leander when his wife's relatives got him started in business, i.e., the self-indexing ledger. This became The Lefebure Corporation. Ben was working for Lefebutes when Charles died of pneumonia. Several people were surprised when they carne in and saw him working in the store. They would say, "I thought you were dead!" They thought Ben was a Lefebure. The store sold everything from piss to machinery,buggies and thrashing machines. When Ben was 22 he was runninga. store in Swisher. One day Leander came in and said he wanted to talk to him. Leander said the Weiner farm (the Lenicek farm across from the John Buresh farm) is for sale and I want to buy it. And I want you to run my store. Ben said no —he could, make more running bis own store. Leander then replied, "I will sell it to you thea.." Berl said, "I don't have the rr,oney." But Leander said, "Pay what you can and I will tape your note for the remainder." They counted the inven- tory and finished at 2:00 in the;morning. Leander gave wholesale prices on the goods, etc. Leander pur- chased the farm and operated it. Ben had the store until 1913 or 1914. when he sold it to And-de's. Ben said the automobile was conning in and people would start going to Cedar Rapids. He figured it would be a good time to sell out.
