Fairfax has no bandstand, but each Wednesday a platform is 3 a r rS "��,�r r�q � '.r��'�A'' 4�✓ 7 r l ,�t 4set up iin the middle of the main intersection of �. a 9 l I Et' the town. Scheduled to begin at $, the concert 3r ,st . n rt t I Po I I :x (pg.3Yr ?» ;s seldom.gets under way right on the dot because there are chairs to sit up, music to distribute, lights to arrange---and besides, what's the hurry. Families come into town, park their cars near the band platform, give each of the kids a nickel to spend, and settle down to enjoy the music. Iden come in from the fields in their working clothes for a visit with neighbors and townsfolk, sit along the curbing or the steps of the bank and talk things over while the town band plays music they like---marches, polkas, familiar folk songs and the national anthem. Kids run round and round the platform having the time of their lives. Neighbors get out of the cars and rub elbows as they visit, and there is a steady hum of talking and laughing through out the concert, broken only by the honking and applause after each number. Pedestrians have the right of way as traffic crawls slowly through town. The atmosphere is one of quiet, relaxation and enjoyment as hard working middle-westerners get together for an evening. RECOLLECTIONS F THE AST I The top view shows G.W. Ayers of Columbus function, the director, leading his 20-piece group in a lively march. Pencil behind his ear, Mr. Ayers beats time with one foot and the end of his clarinet as the musicians ranging in age from 9 to 50 years, follow him. At left center are Maureen and Margaret Merrill of St. Paul, who were visiting their grandmother,Mrs. Delia Mulherin, and dropped in to pay a call on Edgar Firkins, in the background, who owns the drugstore. The platform mentioned alcove was set up in the intersection of Main and Vanderbilt Streets. Sometime during World War I a flagpole was erected in the middle of this intersection. The base of the pole was a large concrete circle approximately 6 ft. in diameter. Frank Holets, who had a harness shop on the corner would raise and lower the flag each day until he moved out of Fairfax. It is not known who assumed this responsibility after that.
