The purpose of the meeting • Fire Department News was to prioritize plans for a Prairie Creek trail initiating at C Street in Cedar Rapids, traveling west along Prairie Creek and connecting to any future City of Fairfax trail. • Recollections of the Past Attendees included members of the Linn County Trails Association, as well as the Fairfax Trails Com- mittee. Development strategies and responsibilities were discussed,with the next meeting to be held in the Fairfax Public Library on April 21 st at 6:00 PM. CITE'HALL HOURS The Community Visioning Program serves Iowa communities under 10,000 in population. The program helps community volunteers envision aesthetic and ecological improvements along roadsides and related Monday—friday landscapes by blending environmental stewardship with community improvement projects. 10:00 PM—2:30 PM Community members participate in a process that includes the following steps: 1. Assessing local natural, cultural and aesthetic landscape resources. 2. Identifying & prioritizing community needs. 3. . City Hall Phone:846-2204 Developing a community vision concept plan. 4. RECOLLECTIONS OF THE PAST Railroad Comes t® Fa Irfax in 1860 One of the most important occasions in Linn County was when on .Tune 15, 1859; the first railroad made, its entrance into Cedar ,vYY Rapids and once and for all made the town the chief city to this part of the state. The railroad, which had the government a . contract to deliver mail between post off es, was being extended westward from Kingston (Cedar Rapids) by the Cedar Rapids and - Mssouri River Railroad Company and in 186,0 laid 44 miles of track from. Cedar Rapids to Chelsea. Cedar Rapids was the The Chicago&Northwestem Depot termination of the Chicago, Iowa and Fairfax,IA Nebraska Railroad. Both txacks were leased to the Chicago and. Northwestern Railroad Company and eventually integrated into the Chicago and Northwestern line. On May 22, 1863, the village of Vanderbilt was laid out by S. W. Durham, county surveyor, on the land of George W. N Vanderbilt, being the northeast quarter of _ w Section 167, Township 82 north Range 8. Mr, B. E. Vanderbilt was the first station agent and postmaster. He also built the first depot. With the coming of the railroad, the ,the Milwaukee Depot name of the village was changed to Fairfax Located at Soutliv ew Rd&76th Ave.,Fairfax on August 26, 1863.. Before the advent of motor cars, Fairfax had a substantial passenger business. Mr. Clarence McCauhy was the last station agent in Fairfax. The station agent lived in a house provided by the railroad at 116 Iain Street. Mr. McCauhy also served as the town u marshal. When the depot was closed Mr. f a x McCauhy � � transferred to Tipton. � The date of the closing of the depot in Fairfax aid its subsequent razing is uncertain.
