RED CEDAR PERFORMANCE AT FAIRFAX PUBLIC LIBRARY The Red Cedar(Chamber) Community Connections performance, Sunday, May 23, at 3 PM F A at the Fairfax Public Library gave the audience a preview of the Spillville Variations on a Theme by Dvorak, a new work by fifteen Iowa composers, inspired by music that Dvorak wrote when lie lived in Spillville in 1893. The: Spillville Variations will be performed at the National Museum Prague, the Czech Republic by the Red Cedar Chamber Music in October, t 2004. Jan Boland(flute)and John Dowdall(guitar)were joined by Christine Rutledge(viola), The three musicians quickly charmed the audience with their insights and whimsical tid-bits of information pertaining to the eight vacations on the program. Robert Lindsey Nasif(variation#3) said, "Dvorak came to Iowa to find peace. Instead he found inspiration or perhaps inspiration found him. In the stillness and solitude of the Special points of countryside Dvorak heard new music. My variations is a free form fantasy in minor mode interest: based on a brief but obsessive and insistent musical figure from his string quartet." Tracey Rush (variation #6) in her statement says, "If Dvorak visited Spillville today, he • City Minutes probably would have taken a Sunday drive to nearby Postville. E CITY OF FAIR1147AX CELEBRATES ATES TRE 12H ANNUAL FA FAX USA DAY The twelfth annual Fairfax USA Day, (Independence Day Celebration)is slated for Saturday,July 3rd,2004. Fairfax USA Day started in the summer of 19'92 and continues this summer,Involving the communities of Fairfax and Walford, it has grown in popularity each year. i The principal players in.USA Day include: the faith communities of Fairfax and Walford; the Fairfax.American Legion and Le- gion Auxiliary;the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department and the City of Fairfax. The local Masonic Lodge, local farmers,the local banks,various area merchants and farmers are also primary contributors. The 2004 USA Day schedule is still a work in progress, however here's the current update. Please be assured that all events are intended to promote family values and family fun.without a lot of expense. Last year, the parade was the largest to-date with eighty two entrants. There was lots of candy,giveaways and fun.The 2004 parade starts at 11:30. Our"grand marshals"this year are to include troops just back from war in.Iraq, Show your support,respect,patriotism and appreciation as we get a chance to say "thank you". The theme for this year's parade is "FAIRFAX, HOME IN THE HEARTLAND". The annual kid's carnival, ice cream social and luncheon are to commence at 12:30 immediately following the parade. We are. scheduled to have two inflatable attractions and one trackless trains sponsored by local merchants and friends of the Fairfax community.The city of Fairfax will be asked to sponsor a second trackless train as well. Fire trucks and a helicopter for viewing are being scheduled for the afternoon. around 3:00 pm. We hope to have plenty of action on the ball diamonds in the afternoon. Patrick's church fol- lowed by the cornerstone of the day's events: an outdoor Ecrunenical liturgy service which is scheduled at 6:00 pm in the church- yard. At 6:30 local talent, David Collingwood opens the "Concert under the stars" sponsored by Fairfax 'State Savings Bank. Council .embers present: Beer, Frieden, Scott, Glick, Wainwright. Others present: Randy Scholer, Nancy Flickinger, Dave Yanecek, Ron Dusil, David Selzer,Amy Peterson,Patrick Stater and various citizens. Frieden moved to approve the agenda and the Clerk's Financial Statements, seconded by Wainwright. Roll call vote: Ayes: Beer,Frieden,Scott, Glick, Wainwright, Nuys:None. It was found that when the original plat was revised it had never been signed or recorded. This matter will be followed through with. During a May 27'h meeting priorities were discussed. The result: #1 priority—A walking trail to connect the old and new parts of Fairfax. #2 priority—Improving signs coming into Fairfax. In the future,there will be a booth at USA Day for citizens to visit. The next meeting is July 9 from 9:00 AM-7:00 PM at the Fairfax Public Library, This meeting will consist of a tour of the community emphasizing areas of priority,brainstorming,and design and refinement of concept ideas, Amy Peterson,ECICOG, updated Council on the status of the Housing Project at 328 Siepman Drive, She reported that there is enough money to do another house. The Cotincil approved Amy to proceed in seeking an amendment to our homebuyer assistance program. The request is to extend contract end date from June 15,2004 to December 31,2004,and to increase the number of units to be completed by one. A discussion was held on a survey that was conducted regarding the wages of the Maintenance I and 11 positions,The consensus of Council was to set the Maintenance I wage range at$16.00420.00 per hour and the Maintenance 11 wage range at 514.00. 18-00 per hour. Beer moved to increase the present Maintenance I wage to$19.00 per hour and the Maintenance 11 wage to$16.00 per hour,both retroactive to May 17,2004,seconded by Frieden.
