The. elevator was owned by Frank Bellon, John Bureh and James Wilson. James L. Claflin worked at the elevator from about 1929 to 1937. After Mr. C1affin left for another job, he was succeeded by Bill Selzer who was 16 years old at the time. The elevator was open every day after school and all day on Wednesday and Saturday. Bill was paid 50 cents per day. The Farmers Co-op Grain elevator was in the grain business but the major part of the business was selling coal...selling 10 to 12 cars of coal each winter. William Zamastll, Father of John and Ray Zamastil, owned a Model T truck and delivered coal for 75 cents a ton. Coal was stored in several bins and Curtis and Bill Selzer received 25 cents a ton for shoveling coal into these storage bins. Curtis Selzer Remembers When.. Poultry Raffles were an annual social event sponsored by the Fairfax American Legion. In 1940, the Legion Hall was located on the West end of Main Street next to the viaduct...on the South side of the street. Light up the Community ! ! ! 2004 Christmas Lighting Contest Join the City of Fairfax in a City-wide Christmas decoration & lighting contest. The crunching of the snow underfoot as you wally around your community on a cold December night or drive by in your frosty window covered car, viewing the sparkling festive lights gives all of us a special joyful feeling. By celebrating in this winter wonderland season, you could become a winner in our City-wide contest! So drag those Christmas lights down from your attic and wrap them around your house and trees and join in the fun so everyone will have an opportunity to view your stunning seasonal creation! Let the Christmas decorating begin—tum Fairfax into a magical wonderland—drawing people from near and far. RULES JUDGING PRIZES & OTHER DETAILS 1. livery home in the City of Fairfax is eligible for this contest. City employees, Mayor and Council members are not eligible to win. 2. Displays need to be lighted from December 10th through December 26111 from 6:00 PM — 9:00 PM in order to provide ample viewing time for voting purposes. 3. Entries will be submitted by the residents of Fairfax. Fill out the form at the bottom of the page with your nomination for the home that you feel has used lights and decorations in the most creative and imaginative way and mail it to City Hall or drop it off in the drop box at City Hall. Please note that the address of the home is required...it is not necessary to have the name of the homeowner. 4. A list of the nominees will be listed in the December Fairfax Facts newsletter along with a ballot for voting. The judging"committee"will consist of Fairfax residents who will view the nominations and submit their votes to determine the winners. Winners will be announced in the January Fairfax Facts. 4. The deadline to submit your nomination is December 15, 2004. Others present: Nancy Flickinger, Ron Dusil, Dave Yaneeek, Deputy Pat Brady, Brad Meyers,Mick&Deanna Heintz,and various citizens.. Motion carried. Council reviewed information provided by Councilor Beer regarding the tree planting for the new development. Upon due consideration, Council ,d that Beer should get three new bids for trees,with the carne criteria followed on all bids. 'Upon receiving new bids,Council will review then). .1uncil discussed adopting a sign ordinance.We are waiting for the Planning and Zoning Committee to make recommendations. "Phis topic will be on the City Council December agenda. Council decided to proceed with a Christmas lighting contest for the citizens of Fairfax. Information about the contest will be in the November Fairfax Facts newsletter. Upon due consideration,it was the consensus of the Council that the cost to hire a company to put up Christmas lighting in town is not feasible at this time. Maintenance is to get prices to find out what it will cost to run additional electricity to various locations in Fairfax for our annual Christmas lighting, Vernon Cerveny reported on the Visioning Committee meeting. The desire is to start working on the South entrance of town. Continuity of signs is a high priority. The cost to design signs was discussed. Vernon mentioned that there are various other sources of funding to pursue for the project. Councilor Wainwright mentioned the upcoming highway 1.51 project and not to proceed with projects near the roadway that may be disrupted by the DOT. Additional money for trees will be discussed at the budget meeting in January. The next meeting will be November 17, 2004, at the Fairfax Library at 6:00 P,M. Wainwright moved to approve the Claims List dated November 9, 2004, seconded by Frieden. Roll call vote: Ayes: Frieden, Scott„ Glick, Wainwright, Nays: None. Absent: Beer. Motion earried. Reports: No one was present for the library report or the fire department report, Ron Dusil, maintenance, stated that Clark'Farms began the lagoon drudging today. Pace will be installing the speed humps soon,resulting in portions of Fairfax Rd.and Church St.being closed for several hours to do the project. The city filled the holes on Fairfax Rd. The end-of-the-season mowing has been done and the generators are ready for winter Open discussion: Council discussed the bill for sewer back up damage to the Brad Meyers residence at 313 Burger Lane. Councilor Wainwright will look into this matter. Frieden moved that due to the lift station being down, that the City will reimburse Brad Meyers for the damage to his residence, seconded by Wainwright. Roll call vote: Ayes: Frieden,Scott,Glick,Wainwright, Nays: None. Absent: Beer. Motion carried. Councilor Glick mentioned a need for help plowing snow this winter. Ron will check into this. Council considered the request to send the Fairfax Facts to residents outside of the Fairfax area. Due to cost and time requirements,it was decided not to pursue thus.
