FIRE DEPARTMENT FAIRFAX FIRE&RESCUE PROUDLY SERVING FAIRFAX— WALFORD&SURROUNDING AREA The year 200T is rapidly coming to an end.With the holidays upon us, please use some basic safety precautions decorating for Christmas. -For those of you who buy real Christmas trees, keep the tree watered at all times. -Keep your tree away from heat ducts and fireplaces always. -Check and replace worn,frayed and damaged cords,Iught sets or wires.Use only UL listed equipment -Never overload your electrical outlets. -Never burn wrappings in your fireplace or woodstove. -Always unplug your tree lights and any other Christmas lights when leaving home. During the holiday season it Is very common for us to burn candles in our homes. The warm glow created by candles can be very beautiful and also very deadly. As candle sales skyrocket during the holiday season,so do fires in the home. When using candles, please use some common sense. Keep candles away from any type of combustible material, Use candle holders that will allow for the wax overflow. IDo not leave candles UNATTENDED. NEVER let your children light the candles. Many fires in the home are direct results of children taking,candles into their bedrooms and closets and lighting them.This is where tragedies begin. Please be aware of the consequences if you feel that there is a need to bum candles. For those of you who use electric blankets please check your cords for wear.Also shut off your electric blanket when you get out of bed. Do not rely on the automatic shut off. For those of you who have fire hydrants in the front of your homes; please do not pile snow around them.Actually we are asking for your as- sistance to help clean the snow away from the hydrant.Please help us so that we can respond to your needs faster. The fire dept.members would like,to welcome Mickey Crispin to the department, Mickey is Wready taking Firefighter I classes and has medi- cal training. The first responder class being taught at the fire station is now in its fourth week. Eight of our members are involved in the training.These people who are receiving their medical training will help us to better serve the people in our fire jurisdiction. The members of the Fairfax Fire Dept.would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. It is the constant sup- port of the people in our fire district that helps us to better serve you in your time of need. Other items of discussion/reports - Sheriff- The Sheriff's report was given by Deputy Omar and the Call for Service log was submitted and dis- cussed. Deputy Omar was asked to increase patrol for speeding around the Fairfax Road area. Library- Cathy Bayne reported on new hires and the need for a new board member to replace Jason Rabe.She will be going to Walford Council to discuss shared services. Maintenance- Ron,Dusi)re- ported on two fire hydrants replaces;lift stations and generators all in working order;will be purchasing fence for Front Street, Parks-Beer reported on the Fast Parks meeting at which priorities were set,Visioning-Two neighbors from Coneflower Drive volunteered to plant and maintain the flow- ers around the new sign.They are considering a Holiday House Walk for 2008.The trail status Will be discussed at the December meeting.Other- Mr. Krouse and Mr.Huber voiced their concern over the condition of Fairfax Road,The Maintenance Department will sweep it and make sure speed limit signs are replaced. Clerk and Financial Administrator discussed problems with office computer and were instructed to get it updated. Mayor reported that DA Bunch still needs to paint the pavilions in the parks.The money made from the farm ground will be placed Into,a Money Market account. The house in the foreground, located on Railroad Street, was originally a hotel. It was later the home of Tillie Andrle and her mother. It was purchased by the grain elevator and used for storage, eventually becoming structurally unsound. The house was burned as a training, exercise for area Fire Depart- ments in the early 1990s. The large building with a belfry on the extreme left is the Public School (circa 1875). The large structure in the center is the first St. Patrick's Church., Note the numerous barns in the backyards as most everyone had a horse and buggy. There were also chicken coops and, of course, an outhouse. This photograph was proba- bly taken from the top of the grain elevator.
