City workers were able to get the majority of the roads clear with the exception of a few vehicles. Please continue to help us out by keeping vehicles off the road during snowfalls. Although it may seem convenient to just step into the garage and start your vehicle, carbon monoxide can seep back into your home and possibly cause health complications. Remember that carbon monoxide bonds 200 times greater to your blood than oxygen. That smoky exhaust haze that you step into and breathe is poisonous gas. Please think of your welfareand the others in your family. . After watching the local and national news these past few weeks, the severe winter weather that has crippled many states just missed us, We could very well have been one of these areas without electricity. Are we as a community and you as a citizen really prepared for an emergency of this size? Take a look around your home and see just how adequate you really are. It is never too late to start a plan. The city of Fairfax has two emergency shelters if needed. They are St. Patrick's Church and the Fairfax American Legion. Both of these buildings were wired several years ago to be, run off of portable generator power If a true emergency should be declared, these shelters can be put into service. Being on a volunteer fire department, we as members become involved in every imaginable type of auto accidents, fire calls and medical emergencies. Growing up in a small town where most people ali know each other, we as citizens, neighbors and family members have a great concern about each others welfare. it is truly a natural concern to stop and ask, or call one of the firefighters who may have responded to the emergency call about the welfare of the patient or victim. If the firefighter that you ask politely says they don't know, it's because we cannot give out this private information to anyone. It is against the law. We as emergency responders are bound to, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. (HIPAA- LAW.) The law took effect in 2000 and, privacy compliance took effect in 2003. Your health and medical privacy is to be protected. if you as a, person wish to share your welfare with others, that is your own private business. Please respect our position as first responders and don't put us in an uncomfortable position. We all know that everyone means well and your concerns are real. Please try to understand our position as firefighters. Thank you for understanding. Subsequently an election in both counties has been set for a February 13, 2007 election. What is SILO? The School Infrastructure Local Option tax was developed by the Iowa Legislators in 1998 to give school districts a revenue-producing alternative to property taxes for technology needs,school infrastructure and property tax relief. SILO is approved and collected on a county-wide basis and money Is disbursed on a per pupil basis. This is an im- portant issue for all Prairie students. It cannot be used for salaries or regular operating expenses. What can SILO be used for? • Property tax relief • Buildings and sites • Technology and equipment How much would it raise for Prairie? If approved in both Linn and Johnson County, College Community will receive an estimated $29 million over a ten- year period. How would Prairie use SILO proceeds? If approved in both counties the board has approved these intended uses: • $2�O million for direct property tax relief • $9 million for technology and school infrastructure How many counties currently have SILO?
