The year 2006 was a busy year for the fire dept. We,responded to 145 calls. These calls consist of
fires,medical calls, auto accidents, storm watch and mutual aide to surrounding fire services and
the Eastern Iowa Airport. All of our goals were accomplished without loss of life or injury to any of
our firefighters. This is and will always be our main objective.
Just a reminder that when you pull vehicle up to the gas pump for refueling, h t your vehicle off

and extinguish all smoking materials before filling with gas. It seems almost every day that I acstops.

Please act responsible and be safe.
For those of you who have fire hydrants in front of your home or business please do not pile snow
around the hydrant. If the hydrant some how becomes drifted with snow,please help us out and
clean the snow away. This will help to find the hydrant faster and get our fire hoses connected
faster to help put the fire out. it just may be your home were trying to save.
Always remember shut off your electric blankets when getting out of bed. Always remind your
children to. Statistics show that each year fires in the home have been increasing due to malfunc-
tioning electric blankets. Stay wain,but please stay safe.
The Fairfax Fire Dept. members would like to congratulate firefighter Tadd Andrle and his wife
Melissa on the arrival of their new baby daughter. Welcome to sleepless-nights.
The December firefighters' meeting was followed by the annual soup supper for all members and
retirees from the fire dept. it is always a great pleasure to have everyone back and listen to some of
the quite humorous stories they tell of years gone by. These retired firefighters are the ones who
built foundation and principles by which we follow today. The citizens of our fire district appreci-

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) and South Slope Cooperative have teamed up to offer a great scholar- j
ship opportunity.
The FRS was established in 1994 and through its partnership with the National Telecommunications Coopera-
tive Association(NTCA) promotes, educates and advocates to the public rural telecommunications issues in
order to sustain and enhance the quality of life within communities throughout rural America. In keeping with
its mission, furthering the education of niral youth is one of the foundation's primary focuses. Our company,
South Slope Cooperative Communications Company, is a member of NTCA and is proud to support FRS in.
this worthy endeavor.
Following are additional important details:
Scholarships are available to seniors only.
FRS will award twenty-five $2,500 scholarships nationwide. FRS will fund$2,400 and South Slope will fund
$500.00.
All applications must be postmarked to FRS no later than March 1,2007.
This is not a scholarship based on grade point average. Rather, it is geared toward seniors who are good., solid
students,but may not qualify for scholarship programs based solely upon.GPA.

Blast From the Past
Charles Knickerbocker was born close to Fairfax on.April 24, 1.883, As of 1990 when
the family sold their home, the Knickerbockers lived in and around Fairfax for 107 years. Knickerbockers
were known for their Percheron and Belgian stallions. The pictures below were posted in the Gazette,date
unknown.

From the diary of Kathryn Buresh, written in 1911. Kathryn, the daughter of John.and Kate Buresh,was born
in 189L Kathryn taught school at Cherry Valley, which was a one room school house at the time. She ax ar-
ried Clarence Gibson (she refers to Clarence as C.C.G. in the diary). Clarence and Kathryn had three children,
Howard, Clarence Jr., and Lavonne.
